Ministry Allocates More Than RM500 Million To Tackle Water Supply Issue In 3 States

The Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra), Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the Cabinet in its meeting on September 27, 2023, agreed to allocate RM500 million for the resolution of water supply issues in the state of Kelantan.

“This allocation will be coordinated through a loan to Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad (PAAB). The Ministry held a coordination meeting with the Kelantan State Government in February 2024 to discuss the implementation of these projects.

The Kelantan State Government will inform whether it agrees to accept the allocation of RM500 million as a loan as part of efforts to address the water supply issues in Kelantan.” Fadillah said in reply to a concern raised by Dr. Hajah Wan Martina Wan Yusoff today (Mar 25) at Dewan Negara.

Answering the concern of Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Anifah Aman @ Haniff Amman the water supply issues in the Federal Territory of Labuan, Fadillah said that a total of RM55 million has been allocated for 2024, comprising RM25 million for short-term works and RM30 million for implementing medium and long-term projects.

“Currently, four short-term projects are in progress, each undergoing the tender process and slated for completion in stages between 2024 and 2025.” Fadillah said.

These projects include (i) the replacement of pump systems and related infrastructure on Pulau Enoe, with an allocated budget of RM7 million, (ii) mechanical and electrical repair works, along with associated tasks in Bukit Kallam, Kerupang, and Arsat Pump House, totaling RM11 million, (iii) the replacement of the transformer at the Water Treatment Plant (LRA) Lawa Gadong, along with associated works at LRA Lawa Gadong, amounting to RM3 million, and (iv) the replacement works for the water tank at LRA Lawa Gadong and restoration of the Kerupang Tank, w

“The Ministry is confident that the efforts already undertaken and currently ongoing will be able to resolve the water supply issue in Labuan.” Fadillah added.

Additionally, Fadillah said that there are five (5) water treatment plant construction projects currently underway in Kedah, namely LRA Jenun Baru, LRA Lubuk Buntar Lama, LRA Bukit Selambau, and LRA Sungai Limau, funded by the Federal Government through grants, while LRA Pelubang is funded by the Federal Government through a loan.

“All five projects are fully implemented by the State Government of Kedah.” Fadillah said in response to Abdul Nasir Idris inquiry.

“The Ministry has received requests for scope expansion and additional funding for the LRA Pelubang Upgrading Project as well as requests for additional funding for the LRA Lubuk Buntar Lama Upgrading Project.

These requests are currently under review to ascertain the need for additional allocation for both projects.” he added.
