Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg has announced plans to establish the Central Port Authority, aimed at streamlining the management of all ports within the state. This initiative will include overseeing the ports of Kuching, Miri, Tanjung Manis, Sibu, and Bintulu, among others.
Highlighting the significance of this move, Abang Johari emphasized its impact on Sarawak’s ongoing economic development and its indirect influence on the broader Malaysian economy.
“Sarawak is a key exporter of various resources, and as part of our post-Covid-19 development strategy, we are focusing on the renewable energy industry,” said Abang Johari during a media briefing.
“These ports will play a pivotal role in facilitating our economic objectives. In particular, we are focusing on developing specialized terminals to support emerging industries such as hydrogen in the Bintulu area.” he added.
The premier’s remarks came following a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony to elevate the status of Bintulu Port to the Sarawak State Port, a transition expected to be finalized this year.
The MoU, signed between Transport Minister Anthony Loke and Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, signifies a significant step in enhancing Sarawak’s port infrastructure.
Abang Johari further highlighted the anticipated increase in cargo traffic at Sarawak ports, particularly with the surge in exports of green energy products.
“With the management under the Sarawak government, we aim to efficiently coordinate all export activities through strategic ports,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude to the federal government for its commitment to transitioning Bintulu Port’s status, acknowledging its potential to not only benefit Sarawak but also contribute to Malaysia’s economic growth.
As the global focus shifts towards green energy, Sarawak’s emphasis on eco-friendly products is poised to attract investors and align with international trends, Abang Johari added.
