Govt Allocates RM6.85 Billion To Enhance Electricity Supply Resilience Amid Disruptions

Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, announced today in Dewan Negara that the Federal Government has taken decisive steps to tackle frequent electricity supply disruptions, ensuring the reliability and stability of the power grid across Peninsular Malaysia. In response to a question posed by Tuan Prabakaran A/L M Parameswaran regarding interventions taken by the Federal Government to address these disruptions, Fadillah emphasised the importance of meticulous monitoring of electricity supply performance by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the licensed provider serving over nine million customers.

Fadillah highlighted the oversight of TNB’s operations by the Energy Commission (EC), which ensures adherence to stringent standards and prompt resolution of issues affecting service delivery.

Factors contributing to supply disruptions, such as conductor damage, fuse box malfunctions, insulation piercing connector (IPC) faults, and vegetation interference, have been identified. TNB employs sophisticated monitoring systems and specialized teams to promptly address these challenges.

The effectiveness of these measures is reflected in the System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI), which measures the duration of disruptions experienced by users annually.

SAIDI targets set for Peninsular Malaysia have consistently been met, with interruptions remaining below the specified threshold of 48 minutes per customer per year.

“Overall, the SAIDI achievement for Peninsular Malaysia still demonstrates good performance, with records remaining below the set target of 48 minutes per customer per year.” Fadillah added.

TNB’s proactive approach includes intensified maintenance activities, the establishment of Dedicated Switching Teams (DCT) in high-disruption areas, and continuous installation of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) facilities at strategic locations. These comprehensive measures aim to fortify the power grid against potential disruptions, ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply for consumers.

The Federal Government’s commitment to allocating RM6.85 billion annually for Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s (TNB) Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) under the Incentive Based Regulated (IBR) RP3 mechanism reflects its determination to enhance system reliability. “To enhance the performance of electricity supply in Peninsular Malaysia, the Government has approved an allocation of RM6,851.5 million per year for Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s (TNB) Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) under the Incentive Based Regulated (IBR) RP3 mechanism to improve system reliability with various initiatives to be implemented from 2022 to 2024.” he said.
