The global box office had a familiar leader this weekend, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day adding US$109 million and pushing its worldwide total to US$2.22 billion.
The Sony and Marvel film earned US$39 million in North America and US$70 million from international markets in its fourth weekend. Its worldwide total now puts it sixth on the all-time box office list, ahead of Star Wars: The Force Awakens at US$2.07 billion.
International markets continue to make up most of the film’s earnings. China has contributed US$221.4 million, while the UK has reached US$117.8 million. France, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, Australia and South Korea have also passed the US$50 million mark.
The weekend also marked a milestone for the Insidious franchise. Insidious: Out of the Further opened with US$60.3 million worldwide, including US$25.3 million in North America and US$35 million from 64 international markets.
The latest instalment brings the franchise’s combined worldwide total to US$800 million. Mexico led the overseas opening with US$4.2 million, while the Philippines recorded US$4 million, its second-highest horror opening on record.
According to Deadline, 23 international markets recorded new franchise opening records for Insidious: Out of the Further, including Peru, Italy and the Netherlands.
Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey added US$87.5 million in its sixth weekend. The film has now reached US$1.44 billion worldwide, making it Nolan’s highest-grossing film.
Elsewhere, Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie reached US$103.4 million worldwide, while Minions and Monsters crossed the US$500 million mark with a global total of US$504.6 million.
