KIGIP Set To Become Northern Malaysia’s Talent And Innovation Hub

The Integrated Green Industrial Park (KIGIP) in Perak is poised to emerge as a leading center for talent and innovation in northern Malaysia. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that KIGIP’s strategic location near key educational and training institutions will help ensure a continuous supply of skilled graduates for high-value roles within the park.

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat on today (July 2), Anwar emphasised that KIGIP, once fully operational, will significantly boost the national economy by attracting both foreign and domestic investments. The park is designed to support the development of domestic industries through strong supply chains established by multinational corporations (MNCs) operating there.

“KIGIP will not only drive economic activity and attract high-quality investments but will also provide excellent career opportunities for local talent in surrounding areas,” Anwar said.

Anwar was addressing concerns raised by Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik (PH-Balik Pulau) regarding KIGIP’s potential impact on domestic investment and alignment with the Energy Transition Roadmap, as well as the need to address water supply issues in Seberang Perai Selatan.

KIGIP, a government-backed initiative based on a public-private partnership (PPP) model, aims to develop a high-tech industrial zone in the Kerian district of Perak. Announced in the 2024 Budget on October 13, 2023, the park will be powered primarily by solar energy, with the first phase covering 400 hectares.

The park’s location near major electrical and electronic (E&E) hubs in Penang and Kulim Hi-Tech Park (KHTP) in Kedah will cater to the ‘spillover demand’ from these industries.

To address water supply concerns in nearby areas, including Seberang Perai Selatan and Sungai Bakap, the government will implement the Raw Water Transfer Project. This project, with a capacity of 1,500 million liters per day and an estimated cost of RM4 billion, will include both water transfer and treatment components.

Anwar assured that the government will prioritise and expedite this project to resolve water issues in the Kerian, Larut, Matang, and Selama districts in Perak.
