Penang Approves New LRT Route

Penang’s Chief Minister said he sent an official letter to the Minister of Transport, Anthony Loke Siew Fook to confirm the State Government’s choice although the new route slighly differs for the proposed new Mutiara Penang Light Rail Transit Project in the island.

According to the Chief Minister, the finalised lineup is the best in terms of connectivity to other lineups involving Silicon Island in the future.

“In fact, the original line did not have a line up to Penang Sentral in Butterworth.

“For other technical matters such as the height and alignment along the bridge route will be handed over to MRT Corp,” he said.

The Federal Government took over the Penang Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit project from the state government, after the decision was reached following the Cabinet’s decision to approve the proposed development of the project on March 22.

Thee government then decided to appoint MRT Corp, a company 100 percent owned by the Minister of Finance Incorporated (MoF Inc) as the developer and asset owner.

The Penang LRT project is estimated to cost RM10.5 billion.
