Penang Gives Free Water For First 10,000 Litre And RM20 Rebate

Penang State Exco Zairil has stated that the state government will give free water for six months starting July for the first 10,000 litre per household bill and RM20 rebate to those with a bigger household.

This comes after the state recently increased water tariff in line with the Federal government’s directive but was faced with discontent among its residence.

In accordance to Federal regulations, Penang Water Board said it cannot bill for water supply services in Penang at rates that are higher (or lower) than the exact rates specified.

PBAPP further clarified Water Rates are Higher in all states in Peninsular Malaysia and that Penang’s domestic water rate for the first 35m3 per month is the 2nd lowest in Malaysia. In comparison, the average national domestic rate is RM1.00 per m3 while the state offers for RM0.86 average.

However, despite the explanation many Penangites were not too pleased with the hike and have often directed their views directly to the Chief Minister.
