AWS Announces Major Expansion In Thailand With $5 Billion Investment In 2025

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced plans to significantly expand its infrastructure in Southeast Asia, committing to a 190 billion baht (US$5 billion) investment in Thailand by 2037. This investment will include the launch of a new AWS Asia Pacific (Bangkok) Region, set to go live by early 2025.

AWS has been operating in Thailand since 2006 and established a local office in Bangkok in 2015. The new AWS Region will enhance the existing infrastructure in the country, which includes 10 Amazon CloudFront edge locations, AWS Outposts, and AWS Local Zones. This expansion aims to provide developers, startups, enterprises, and public sector organisations with more options for running applications and serving end users locally, improving data residency and reducing latency.

The AWS Asia Pacific (Bangkok) Region will be the fourth AWS Region in ASEAN, following Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia, which is scheduled to launch in 2024. This new infrastructure aligns with Thailand’s “Ignite Thailand” initiative, aiming to position the country as a digital economy leader in Southeast Asia.

AWS is also committed to addressing the AI skills gap in Thailand. Since 2017, AWS has trained over 50,000 individuals in cloud skills and aims to train 100,000 more by 2026. The “AI Ready” initiative launched in November 2023 provides free AI and generative AI training courses. AWS Academy and various training programs are available to students and professionals across Thailand.
