First Wave Of Durian Season Begins In Penang

The first wave of the durian season in Penang is expected to last until early June, followed by the second wave between mid-June and July.

Tourism and Creative Economy Exco, Wong Hon Wai said, this year, the durian season in Penang will go through the third wave which is expected to start from August until next September.

“I understand from durian orchard owners that this year we may experience three waves of durian harvesting because they have already started to fall, indicating that this season has the potential to be longer with more durian supplies,” he said at the Penang Durian Season Launch Ceremony at Fort Cornwallis near Jalan Padang Old City, yesterday.

Commenting further, Hon Wai informed that Penang produces various types of durian including Black Thorn, Red Prawn (Ang Hae) and Musang King which is the choice of many every time durian season arrives.

“Currently, varieties 604, Ting Xiang, Xiao Hong, Khun Poh, Musang King, and Black Thorn have started to ‘fall’ from the trees.

“The thing that makes Penang durian special is that it ripens naturally.

“We do not use artificial methods to force the fruit to ripen to ensure that every durian tasted is original with its nutrients.
