Malaysia’s Durian Export To China & Poverty Targets In Spotlight At Dewan Rakyat

The issue of exporting fresh durians to China, achieving zero hardcore poverty targets, and the construction of waste-to-energy plants were among the focal points of today’s session in the Dewan Rakyat.

According to the Parliament’s proceedings via the Parliament portal, questions related to these matters were raised during the Oral Question and Answer session.

Chow Yu Hui (PH-Raub) requested the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security to outline the government’s efforts to expedite the process of exporting fresh durians to China and to provide a timeline for when such exports could commence.

He also inquired about the constraints or challenges faced by the ministry in this process and proposed solutions to overcome them.

In addition, Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas) directed questions to the Minister of Economy regarding the state’s efforts aimed at achieving zero hardcore poverty and its action plan.

During the same session, Sim Tze Tzin (PH-Bayan Baru) posed questions to the Minister of Housing and Local Government regarding the list of 18 locations slated for the construction of waste-to-energy plants nationwide, including in Penang.

Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) sought clarification from the Minister of Human Resources on the number of work-related accidents (OSH) recorded and the current approaches taken to enhance awareness among employers, including Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), regarding OSH.

Furthermore, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein (BN-Sembrong) queried the Minister of Economy about Malaysia’s first quarter 2024 inflation rate, which stood at 1.8%, reflecting the economic reality and the increasing cost of living faced by the majority of the population and consumers.

Following the session, the Dewan Rakyat continued with the debate on the motion for the Annual Report and Financial Statement of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) for 2021 and 2022.

Additionally, the agenda for today’s parliamentary proceedings included the second reading of the Limited Liability Partnerships (Amendment) Bill 2024 and the Audit (Amendment) Bill 2024, as well as the resumption of the debate on the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2024.

The Second Session of the Fifteenth Parliament, which commenced today, will span 15 days until July 18.
