Young Culinary Stars Take Center Stage

Sunway Le Cordon Bleu buzzed with culinary creativity during the 2024 National Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition. Eight of Malaysia’s top young chefs displayed their skills, leading to Jonathan Lu Dun Ming from Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill winning the coveted title. Jonathan will now represent Malaysia at the International Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition in Budapest, Hungary, this October.

The annual competition, held at regional, national, and international levels, promotes cultural diversity in food preparation and presentation through a French traditional approach. It provides a platform for young chefs to demonstrate their culinary expertise in a competitive environment.

The young chefs were tasked with creating a three-course meal—appetiser, main course, and dessert—using mandatory “black box” ingredients within three hours. Their dishes were judged on originality, taste, and presentation by a panel of esteemed kitchen judges including Chef Stephane Frelon and Chef Sylvain Dubreau from Le Cordon Bleu Malaysia, Chef Muhammad Firdaus Atan Din from Westin KL, and Chef Mohamad Fauzan Martin from the Academy of Pastry & Culinary Arts Malaysia.

The presentation judges included Chef Hisham Jaafar of KLCC Convention Centre, Chef Khairul Anuar from University of Wollongong Malaysia, and Miss Irene Chen representing the National Chaine Council.

Jonathan Lu’s inventive use of ingredients, refined flavor profiles, and impeccable presentation earned him the grand title. Representing Traders Hotel, Qatrun Nada binti Rosli was the first runner-up, while Bruce Low from EQ Sabayon finished as the second runner-up. Both delivered outstanding performances with innovative dishes.

The event also saw the attendance of National Chaine Council members, including Bailli Delegue of Le Chaine Des Rotisseures Malaysia, Professor Dato’ Dr. Elizabeth Lee, Group Chief Executive Officer of Sunway Education Group, and Conseiller Culinaire Chef Michieletto Federico. The 2017 Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition Malaysia champion and world champion, Amelia Ng, was also present to show her support.
