Malaysia To Express Stance Of Fair, Equitable Energy Transition Implementation At Climate Week

Malaysia’s stance on ensuring that the energy transition is implemented fairly and equitably, including aspects of coal phasing-out, is important to highlight in international forums such as the London Climate Week.

Economic development needs of developing countries must also be considered in the global climate change and energy transition aspirations led by developed countries.

Therefore, it is important to highlight the country’s stance and action plans to reduce the carbon footprint of the electricity supply sector by increasing renewable energy capacity to at least 70% by 2050 and committing not to develop coal-fired power plants, so that these can serve as a model for a fair and equitable energy transition for developing countries.

In a statement released by Ministry Of Energy Transition And Water Transformation today, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Dato’ Sri Fadillah Yusof, will lead a Malaysian delegation to the United Kingdom for an official working visit from 23 to 27 June 2024.

During the official working visit, he is expected to attend the London Climate Action Week 2024 and deliver a keynote address at the High-Level Dialogue on Coal Phase-Out, at the invitation of the United Kingdom Government.

Fadillah’s participation in this High-Level Dialogue is crucial to highlight the perspectives of Malaysia and other developing countries in the energy transition efforts.

Meanwhile, Fadillah is also expected to carry out technical visits to The Vantage RE PLC wind power plant project, a wholly-owned subsidiary of TNB, to observe and learn about the industry development and regulatory control aspects in the UK from the perspective of project developers and owners.

He is expected to attend a meeting with the International Hydroelectric Association (IHA), an international organization representing stakeholders in hydroelectric development. This meeting will explore potential collaborations with IHA to leverage the development potential of hydroelectric power in Malaysia as a baseload electricity supply source, especially for hydroelectric development in Sarawak; and a technical visit to the Wessex Water, a water and sewerage services company in Bath, West London, owned by YTL Power International Berhad.

This technical visit aims to review of the raw water and the management of wastewater treatment systems. The results of this visit are expected to facilitate benchmarking the best practices in water and sewerage services management in the UK against those in our country.

While in the UK, the Deputy Prime Minister is also scheduled to meet with the Malaysian diaspora in London to share about the latest development efforts and initiatives of the country, particularly in the area of energy transition.
