The government has reaffirmed its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and significantly boosting the share of renewable energy in power installed capacity from 25% to 70%, according to Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

Nik Nazmi highlighted that these efforts are supported by Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which outlines the nation’s strategy for its energy mix, greenhouse gas emission reductions, and energy transition initiatives.

He said that reaching Malaysia’s net-zero targets involves a careful balancing act to ensure sustainable, secure, and affordable energy for the future.

He announced that the National Climate Change Action Council (MTPIN) has agreed to establish a National Decarbonisation Committee, which he will chair. Comprising state governments and other stakeholders, this committee aims to ensure an orderly and inclusive transition to low-carbon development in Malaysia.

The MTPIN also agreed to expedite several key policies, including the NETR, the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, and the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap.

Nik Nazmi made these statements during his special address at the SIDC Sustainable and Responsible Investment (SRI) Conference. The conference emphasised the critical need for global unity in prioritising sustainable investments to enhance human well-being and address escalating environmental challenges.
